Zubeen Garg's death: Bandmate alleges manager 'poisoned' Assam singer

Zubeen Garg, the 52-year-old singer from Northeast India, died under mysterious circumstances on September 19 while swimming off Singapore’s Lazarus Island during a yacht outing. The trip was organised as part of the 4th Northeast India Festival. While initial reports suggested drowning, new allegations suggest a far darker scenario, as per a TOI report.

His long-time manager, Siddharth Sharma, was arrested by the SIT on October 1 on charges of criminal conspiracy, murder, and culpable homicide not amounting to murder, following statements from a key witness.

Bandmate Claims Manager Conspired to Poison Zubeen Garg

According to the SIT remand note accessed by TOI, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, Garg’s close associate and bandmate, alleged that Sharma and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta “had poisoned the victim and deliberately chose a foreign venue to conceal their conspiracy.”

Goswami reportedly claimed that Sharma instructed him not to share any videos from the yacht with anyone, raising further suspicions.

Suspicious Behaviour on the Yacht Raises Alarm

Goswami also alleged that Sharma forcibly took control of the yacht, making it unstable, and personally supplied liquor while ensuring the organisers did not provide any drinks. During Garg’s final moments, when he appeared to struggle for breath and froth came from his mouth and nose, Sharma allegedly dismissed it as “acid reflux” and shouted, “Jabo de, jabo de” (let him go, let him go), according to TOI.

Garg’s Swimming Expertise Makes Drowning Unlikely

Goswami emphasised that Garg was an expert swimmer who had trained both him and Sharma, making accidental drowning highly improbable.

Statements from co-singer Amrit Prabha Mahanta and actress Nishita Goswami reportedly corroborated that Sharma had arranged access to liquor and inappropriate company for Garg, including shared accommodation with a female co-singer at Pan Pacific Hotel, Singapore.

SIT Investigation Points to Premeditated Act

The SIT remand note further states that Sharma could not provide satisfactory explanations regarding his actions on the yacht. Material evidence, including financial transactions, witness statements, and other documentary records, allegedly establishes Sharma’s culpability in what is now being treated as a premeditated murder.

Public and Fans Await Justice

The shocking allegations have raised concerns among fans and the music fraternity. Authorities are continuing their probe into the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death, with the investigation expected to reveal more details in the coming weeks.
