Aadhaar update fees hiked 2025–2031: UIDAI revises charges for demographic, biometric, and document updates; how to update online

Send Push
The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced a revision in fees for updating Aadhaar card details, effective October 1, 2025. This is the first fee hike in nearly five years and affects updates to demographic information, biometric data, and supporting documents. Under the new structure, services that were previously inexpensive, such as correcting a name, address, or date of birth, have become costlier, while biometric updates now carry higher charges. Children’s updates remain free at specific age stages to ensure compliance without financial burden. Residents are advised to plan updates carefully, use online portals where possible, and be aware of the new charges to avoid unnecessary expenses while keeping their Aadhaar details accurate and up to date.

Why UIDAI increased Aadhaar update fees

UIDAI oversees one of the largest biometric identification systems in the world, with more than a billion residents registered. Maintaining this system requires high-end technology, frequent software upgrades, secure storage, and trained personnel to handle enrolment and verification requests.

The fee revision is intended to:

  • Cover administrative costs of enrolment centres and staff.
  • Support secure biometric and demographic management systems.
  • Encourage residents to use digital channels for updates where possible, reducing operational load.
  • The new fee structure will be valid until September 30, 2028, after which UIDAI may revise it again.

Aadhaar service charges: Fee structure and updates from 2025 to 2031 explained

During this period, UIDAI has defined a structured fee system for updating Aadhaar services.

  • Aadhaar generation: For children aged 0–5 years, the service is free for residents, with registrars receiving Rs 75 as assistance. For residents above 5 years, generation remains free for users, but registrars get Rs 125. This ensures enrolment services remain accessible while compensating registrars.
  • Mandatory biometric updates: Children aged 5–7 and 15–17 have free biometric updates, while others pay Rs 125. Biometric updates are important because fingerprints, iris scans, and photographs must be accurate for identity verification.
  • Demographic updates: Corrections to name, address, date of birth, or contact details cost Rs 75 when done separately, but are free if combined with a biometric update. Accurate demographic details are critical for banking, subsidies, taxation, and other official services.
  • Document updates: Proof of Identity (PoI) or Proof of Address (PoA) updates at enrolment centres or via the myAadhaar portal cost Rs 75. Online updates reduce the need for physical visits.
  • Aadhaar printouts: Residents can request physical copies of Aadhaar at Rs 40.
  • Financial assistance is provided to registrars only for successful transactions, encouraging accurate and complete enrolments.

From October 2028, UIDAI will increase fees for most services to account for operational costs and inflation:

  • Aadhaar generation: Fees for residents remain free, but registrar assistance increases to Rs 90 for children and Rs 150 for adults.
  • Mandatory biometric updates: Fees rise to Rs 150 for both children (ages 5–7 and 15–17) and adults (ages 7–15 and above 17). Accurate biometrics are essential for secure identity authentication.
  • Other biometric updates: Also increase to Rs 150, whether or not combined with demographic updates.
  • Demographic updates: Now cost Rs 90 for updates made online or at enrolment centres.
  • Document updates: PoA or PoI updates at centres or via myAadhaar portal increase to Rs 90.
  • Aadhaar printouts: Increase to Rs 50.
  • The revised structure ensures Aadhaar services remain sustainable while continuing to provide essential financial assistance to registrars. Residents are encouraged to plan their updates carefully, use online channels when possible, and keep their details accurate to avoid future verification issues.

How to update Aadhaar updates online: Step-by-step guide

Demographic updates (Name, Address, Date of Birth, Gender, Mobile, Email)

Demographic updates allow residents to correct or change their name, address, date of birth, gender, mobile number, or email.

  • Online: You can update your address and submit document updates through the MyAadhaar portal. For other changes like name, date of birth, or gender, a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra is required.
  • Documents Required: Valid Proof of Identity (PoI) and Proof of Address (PoA).
  • Process: Submit the required documents and biometric data (if applicable) at the centre. You will receive an Update Request Number (URN) to track the status.

Biometric updates (Fingerprint, Iris, Photograph)

  • Biometric updates ensure your fingerprints, iris scans, and photograph remain accurate.
  • When needed: If biometrics are unclear, damaged, or outdated, or for children and teenagers whose physical features change over time.
  • Process: Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with your Aadhaar number and supporting documents. Your biometrics will be captured, and a URN will be provided.
  • Duration: Updates typically take 30–90 days to process.

Document updates (PoI/PoA)

Document updates verify demographic information.

  • Online: Submit scanned copies of PoI or PoA documents through the MyAadhaar portal.
  • In-Person: Visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra with original documents for verification.
  • Charges: Nominal fees may apply depending on the service.

Home enrolment service

For residents unable to visit enrolment centres due to age, disability, or other constraints:

  • Request process: Schedule a home visit by contacting UIDAI.
  • Charges: Applicable fees apply (₹700 for the first resident, ₹350 for additional residents at the same address).
  • Purpose: Ensures accessibility for elderly citizens, people with disabilities, or those in remote areas.

Tracking update status

  • Online Tracking: Use your URN to check the status of your update request via the MyAadhaar portal.
  • Notifications: Residents receive SMS updates on their registered mobile number regarding the status of updates.
